Subtract 8 for 1st Grade Worksheets

There are four sets of “subtraction within 20” worksheets:
Subtract 9 (eg. 16 - 9)
Subtract 8 (eg. 17 - 8)
Subtract 7, 8, or 9
Subtraction with numbers < 20 (eg. 17 - 6)

Subtract 8 for 1st Grade Worksheets

When subtracting 8 from a teen number (a number between 10 and 19), you can use the following method.
Let’s look at some examples:

Examples:

1. Subtract 8 from 14:
   14 - 8 can be done in 2 steps
   10 - 8 = 2
   4 + 2 = 6
   So, 14 − 8 = 6

2. Subtract 8 from 17:
   17 - 8 can be done in 2 steps
   10 - 8 = 2
   7 + 2 = 9
   So, 17 − 8 = 9

3. Subtract 8 from 11:
   11 - 8 can be done in 2 steps
   10 - 8 = 2
   1 + 2 = 3
   So, 11 − 8 = 3

After some practice, the student may recognize the pattern of adding 2 when subtracting 8. This approach is particularly useful for mental math, and it helps students develop their understanding of numbers and basic subtraction concepts.
