A cardinal number is a number used for counting or to indicate quantity. They tell you “how many” of something there are. The numbers 1 through 20 need to be memorize as they don’t follow easy rules. Some of the other numbers can be built up from other numbers. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

The Hyphenation Rule (Numbers 21–99)
When spelling out any two-digit number between 21 and 99, you must use a hyphen to connect the tens digit and the ones digit.
21 → twenty-one
48 → forty-eight
99 → ninety-nine
