Compare & Ordering Numbers
Step 1: Compare the number of digits
The first and easiest way to compare numbers is to count how many digits each one has.
The number with more digits is always greater.
The number with fewer digits is always smaller.
Step 2: Compare numbers with the same number of digits
If the numbers have the same number of digits, you’ll need to look at each number’s place value. Starting from the leftmost digit (the largest place value), compare the digits in the same position.
Compare the first digit of each number. The number with the larger digit is the greater number.
If the first digits are the same, move to the next digit to the right and repeat the process.
Continue this process until you find a difference.
Step-by-Step Example
Let’s order the following three numbers from least to greatest: 62, 595, and 588.
Step 1: Compare the number of digits
62 has two digits.
595 has three digits.
588 has three digits.
Since 62 has the fewest digits, we already know it is the smallest number.
Step 2: Compare numbers with the same number of digits
Now, we only need to compare the two numbers with three digits: 595 and 588.
Start by looking at the leftmost digit (the hundreds place). Both numbers have a 5. Since they are the same, we move to the next digit.
Look at the middle digit (the tens place). 595 has a 9, and 588 has an 8.
Since 8 is smaller than 9, we know that 588 is smaller than 595.
Step 3: Write the final order
By combining the results from the previous steps, we can now write the final order from least to greatest:
62, 588, 595
