Multiplying Decimals Lesson
1. Ignore the Decimals and Multiply the Numbers
Treat the decimal numbers as whole numbers and perform standard multiplication. It is generally easiest to place the number with the most digits on top.
Example: 2.3 × 1.45
Treat this as 23 × 145.
2. Count the Total Decimal Places
Count the total number of digits to the right of the decimal point in all of the original factors.
In 2.3, there is one decimal place (the digit 3).
In 1.45, there are two decimal places (the digits 4 and 5).
Total decimal places: 1 + 2 = 3 places.
3. Place the Decimal Point in the Final Product
In your whole-number answer from Step 1, start from the rightmost digit and move the decimal point (which is currently at the end) to the left by the total number of places you counted in Step 2.
Example continued:
145 × 23 = 3335
Total decimal places needed:3
Starting with 3335, move the decimal 3 places to the left: 3.335
Final Answer: 2.3 × 1.45 = 3.335
