How to add decimals
Adding Decimals Lesson
Step 1: Line Up the Decimal Points
Write the numbers vertically, one above the other, making sure the decimal points are in a straight column. This ensures that you’re adding digits with the same place value (e.g., tenths with tenths, ones with ones).
Step 2: Add Zeros as Placeholders
If the numbers don’t have the same number of digits after the decimal point, add zeros to the end of the shorter number(s). This doesn’t change the value of the number but helps keep everything lined up neatly. For example, 4.5 is the same as 4.50.
Step 3: Add the Numbers
Start adding from the rightmost column, just as you would with whole numbers. Remember to carry over any extra digits to the next column on the left.
Step 4: Place the Decimal Point
In your final answer, put the decimal point directly below the line of decimal points from the problem.
