Order of Operations - Parenthesis, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication & Division
Objective: I know how to perform mixed operations with parenthesis, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
If the calculations involve a combination of parenthesis, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division then
Step 1: First, perform the operations within the parenthesis
Step 2: Then, perform multiplication and division from left to right.
Step 3: Next, perform addition and subtraction from left to right.
Example:
Calculate 9 × (12 – 2) ÷ 5 + 1 =
Solution:
9 × (12 – 2) ÷ 5 + 1 (perform within parenthesis)
= 9 × 10 ÷ 5 + 1(perform multiplication)
= 90 ÷ 5 + 1(perform subtraction)
= 18 + 1 (perform addition)
= 19
