Examples, solutions, videos, and worksheets to help Grade 4 students learn how to use the order of operations for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and parenthesis.
In grade 4, students continue to build on their understanding of the order of operations. The order of operations for grade 4 follows the same principles as in grade 3, but it includes division. Exponents and nested parenthesis are introduced in grade 5. (check the above links)
Here’s the order of operations for grade 4:
Example:
Expression: 5 + (3 × 4) ÷ 2
Perform calculations inside parentheses: 3 × 4 = 12
Expression becomes: 5 + 12 ÷ 2
Perform division: 12 ÷ 2 = 6
Perform addition: 5 + 6 = 11
Therefore, 5 + (3 × 4) ÷ 2 = 11.
We can write the evaluation like this:
5 + (3 × 4) ÷ 2
= 5 + 12 ÷ 2
= 5 + 6
= 11
Have a look at these videos if you need to review the order of operations.
