Word Problems (Change Unknown) Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Word Problems (Change Unknown) game. This game, Story Mystery, takes the “Change Unknown” concept and places it into relatable word problems. By using scenarios like collecting shells or eating snacks, it helps students translate language into mathematical equations (a + ? = c). Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
How to Play
Read the Scenario
Each round presents a short story about Sam. Pay close attention to the numbers and the “action” words:
Addition Action: If Sam “picked some more” or “bought some more,” the number of items increased.
Subtraction Action: If Sam “ate some,” “gave some away,” or “lost some,” the number of items decreased.
Find the Mystery Number
Your goal is to find the “hidden” number that changed the story.
If Sam gained items: Subtract the starting number from the ending number (End - Start = Mystery).
If Sam lost items: Subtract the ending number from the starting number (Start - End = Mystery).
Make Your Choice
Click one of the number buttons in the grid.
Correct! The button turns green, a happy chime plays, and your score goes up.
Oops! If you pick the wrong number, that button turns red, and the correct answer highlights in green so you can learn for the next round.
Continue the Adventure
Click “Next Story ➜” to see what Sam is up to next.
Why This is Great for Learning
This game builds Algebraic Thinking. By solving for “some” (the change), you are essentially solving for x in equations like 5 + x = 9 or 10 - x = 4. It helps bridge the gap between simple counting and higher-level word problem solving.
