How to Play “Word Family Sort”
Step 1: Pick Up a Card
Look at the words resting in the tray at the bottom of the screen. Click and hold (or tap and hold on touchscreens) a word card to pick it up.
Pro Tip: Click any card once while it’s still in the tray to hear it spoken aloud!

Step 2: Find the Right Rhyming Box
Look at the three colored sorting stations at the top. Each box represents a different word family ending (like -at, -ig, or -ug). Drag your word card over the box that makes a perfect rhyme.

Step 3: Drop and Earn Coins
Release the card over the matching family box. If it fits, the card drops into place, the browser reads the word back to you, and you instantly earn 10 coins!

Step 4: Keep an Eye on the Feedback
If you drop a word into the wrong family box, don’t worry! The feedback text below the tray will give you a friendly hint to try another box so you can keep practicing.

Step 5: Hit the Jackpot!
Once you sort all 6 words into their correct homes, the celebratory victory screen will pop up to show off your completion status. Click “Play Again ➔” to generate a brand-new round with randomly selected word families and words!

Why Word Families are useful for young learners?
Word families (groups of words that share a predictable pattern and ending sound, like cat, hat, sat) are incredibly powerful building blocks in early literacy. Instead of forcing children to memorize hundreds of individual words isolated from one another, teaching word families leverages pattern recognition.

Here is why they are so useful for emerging readers and writers:

1. Fast-Tracks Decoding Skills
   When a child learns to read a word like cat sound-by-sound (/c/ - /a/ - /t/), it takes a lot of mental energy. Once they recognize that the chunk -at always stays the same, they no longer need to decode the end of the word every time. They only have to swap out the initial consonant (b-at, m-at, r-at). This shifts their cognitive load from painstakingly sounding out letters to quickly blending chunks of text.
   

2. Boosts Reading Fluency and Confidence
   Fluency is all about speed, accuracy, and expression. By recognizing familiar word families at a glance, young readers stop stuttering over short vowel words. Reading becomes faster and smoother. When a student realizes that knowing one word pattern instantly grants them the ability to read ten other words, their reading confidence skyrockets.
   

3. Improves Spelling Through Analogy
   Word families teach children to spell “by analogy”—using what they already know to figure out what they don’t know. If a child knows how to spell pig and wants to write the word wig, they can deduce that because they rhyme, they likely share the same spelling pattern. This helps them move away from purely phonetic guessing.
   

4. Teaches the Mechanics of Rhyming
   Rhyming is a foundational phonological awareness skill. It teaches kids to listen to the subparts of spoken language. Word families provide a concrete visual map for abstract auditory rhymes. Seeing mop, top, and hop stacked next to each other visually reinforces how words can sound alike at the end while starting differently.
   

5. Seamless Transition to Bigger Words
   The benefits of word families don’t stop at simple three-letter (CVC) words. Once a student masters the foundational short-vowel families, the exact same pattern-recognition strategy applies to complex blends, digraphs, and multi-syllabic words later on:
   Knowing -at leads to th-at and fl-at.
   Knowing -an leads to pl-an and can-dle.
   Knowing -op leads to sh-op and ch-op-per.
   

The Big Picture: Word families essentially give children a “cheat code” for the English language. They transform reading from an intimidating mountain of individual words into a predictable grid of interlocking patterns.
