How to Play Verbs “to Be” Game
Objective
Help your students or players master English subject-verb agreement by correctly identifying which form of the linking verb “to be” fits perfectly into each sentence based on the subject and the time cue (past vs. present).

Gameplay Steps

1. Analyze the Sentence:
   Look for clues.
   Read the challenge sentence displayed in the central box. Pay close attention to the subject pronoun or noun (like I, They, The cat) and any time markers (like right now, yesterday, last night).
   

2. Listen to the Context:
   Optional audio support.
   Click the audio button (🔊) to hear the full sentence spoken aloud with the correct verb filled in. This is perfect for auditory learners and ESL students to check how the sentence should flow naturally.
   

3. Select Your Answer:
   Pick from 4 options.Click on one of the four multiple-choice buttons at the bottom of the card (am, is, are, was, or were) that correctly completes the sentence.

Verb “To Be”
The verb “to be” is the most common, versatile, and unique verb in the English language.

The Forms of “To Be”
The trickiest thing about “to be” is that it is highly irregular. It changes its shape entirely depending on who you are talking about (the subject) and when it happened (the tense).

1. Present Tense (Right Now)
   In the present tense, “to be” breaks down into three forms: am, is, and are.

2. Past Tense (Yesterday / Before)
   In the past tense, it slims down into just two forms: was and were.

The Two Main Roles of “To Be”
In sentences, this verb generally plays one of two core parts:
Role A: The Linking Verb (The Equal Sign)
It simply joins the subject to a description.
Tom is tall. (Tom = tall)
The windows were open. (Windows = open)

Role B: The Helping Verb (The Assistant)
It teams up with a primary action verb to show an ongoing action (continuous tenses).
She is reading a book. (The main action is reading; “is” helps show it’s happening right now).
The dogs were barking all morning. (The main action is barking; “were” helps show it was ongoing in the past).
