How to play the Value of Digits Worksheet/Game

1. Observe the Underline
   A large two-digit number will appear in the center. Look closely at the red underline:
   If the left digit is underlined, you are looking at the Tens Place.
   If the right digit is underlined, you are looking at the Ones Place.
   

2. Calculate the Value
   You aren’t just identifying the number; you are identifying its value.
   Tens Place Underlined: Multiply the digit by 10. (Example: If the number is 82 and the 8 is underlined, it is worth 80).
   Ones Place Underlined: The digit is worth exactly what it says. (Example: If the number is 82 and the 2 is underlined, it is worth 2).
   

3. Enter and Submit
   Type the value into the input box and click Submit (or press Enter).
   Correct: You’ll hear a cheerful chime, and the feedback will confirm the value.
   Incorrect: The card will shake and play a low tone. This is your cue to think: “Is this digit in the tens place or the ones place?"
   

“Value” vs.“Digit”
A common point of confusion is the difference between the digit and its value.
The Question: “What digit is in the tens place?” (Answer: 4)
The Value: “What is the value of that digit?” (Answer: 40)

Tips for Learning Value
Expansion: Practice “expanding” the number. For 52, explain that it is 50 + 2. This makes it much easier to see why the 5 is worth 50.

If you get stuck, try saying the number out loud slowly. The way we say numbers often gives us the answer.
