Unit Price (Fractions & Decimals) Worksheet/Game
Welcome to the Unit Price (Fractions & Decimals) Challenge! Your objective is to look at bulk invoices of specialty items and quickly calculate the value of exactly one single unit. Because real-world wholesale supply chains don’t always operate in nice whole numbers, you will have to navigate cargo manifests measured in fractional lots (like 3/4 of a pound) and decimal volumes (like 2.5 gallons). Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play

  1. Configure Your Dashboard: Before entering the marketplace, use the toggle switches on the main menu to customize your session. You can enable or disable fractions, decimals, the synthesizer audio effects, and the 60-second blitz timer.

  2. Analyze the Bulk Deal: Once you hit Enter Marketplace, a card will appear showing an item emoji, a total invoice cost, and a bulk quantity.

  3. Submit Your Valuation: Calculate the value for one single unit of that product, type your answer into the price box, and click Submit Valuation (or press the Enter key).

  4. Score and Real-Time Calibration:
A correct calculation awards you 10 Profit Score points and moves you instantly to the next shipment.
An incorrect calculation pauses the session timer and opens a Cost Valuation Variance overlay. This screen breaks down the step-by-step arithmetic so you can fix your mistake. Press Enter or click the sync button to clear the overlay and continue trading.

How the Math Works
A unit price is a specific type of unit rate where the first item is money (cost) and the baseline unit is a measure of physical quantity (amount).
To scale any bulk price down to its single-unit equivalent, we execute a direct division problem.

  1. Working with Decimals
When dealing with decimal quantities, you divide the total invoice cost by the total quantity:
    \(\text{Unit Price} = \frac{\text{Total Cost}}{\text{Quantity}}\)
The Scenario: A manifest shows that 2.5 gallons of bulk laundry detergent cost a total of $20.00.
Calculation: Divide the cost by the decimal quantity:
    $20.00 ÷ 2.5 = $8.00
Result: The unit price is exactly $8.00 per gallon.

  2. Working with Fractions
When dealing with fractional quantities, dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal (flipping the fraction upside down):
    \(\text{Unit Price} = \text{Total Cost} \times \frac{\text{Denominator}}{\text{Numerator}}\)
The Scenario: A crate holding \(\frac{3}{4}\) of a pound of fresh strawberries costs a total of $4.50.
The Calculation: To find the value of one full pound, multiply the cost by the reciprocal fraction (\(\frac{4}{3})\):
    \($4.50 \times \frac{4}{3}\)
    \(\frac{$4.50 \times 4}{3} = \frac{$18.00}{3} = $6.00\)
The Result: The unit price is exactly $6.00 per pound.
