How to Play the Game

  1. Configure Your Session: On the main menu, select your preferred problem source (Graphs, Equations, or Mixed) and set the transformation complexity (Level 1: Amplitude & Midline, Level 2: + Period, or Level 3: Full Transformations + Phase Shift).
  2. Start the Game: Click Start 10-Question Session to launch a randomized set of transformation exercises.
  3. Analyze the Function or Graph: Examine the displayed equation or inspect the interactive coordinate grid showing the plotted sine/cosine curve and its dashed midline.
  4. Enter Your Answers: Fill in the numerical fields for Amplitude and Midline, and select the correct Period and Phase Shift options from the drop-down menus.
  5. Check Work & Review: Click Check Answers for instant audio and visual feedback. If any input is incorrect, detailed step-by-step corrections will show the proper values.
  6. Complete the Set: Click Next Problem to advance through all 10 questions and view your final score and streak metrics on the summary screen.

Educational Summary
Trig Transformer: Wave Analyzer is a web-based learning tool designed to build fluency in interpreting parameters of transformed trigonometric functions:

y = A sin(B(x - C)) + D and y = A cos(B(x - C)) + D

By connecting algebraic representations directly to visual representations on a coordinate grid, the game helps students understand how each parameter modifies the parent sine and cosine functions:
Vertical Transformations: A defines the amplitude (vertical stretch factor, |A|) and D shifts the midline vertically (y = D).
Horizontal Transformations: B controls horizontal frequency (determining the period \(\frac{2\pi}{B}\)), while C represents the phase shift (horizontal displacement).

Teacher’s Guide & Classroom Integration
Target Grade Levels: Grades 10–12 (Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Honors/AP Precalculus)
Suggested Learning Objectives
Identify the amplitude (|A|) and midline (y = D) from both standard algebraic equations and plotted sinusoidal graphs. Calculate function periods (Period = \(\frac{2\pi}{B}\)) and identify horizontal phase shifts (C) from factored form equations and coordinate grids.
Transition fluidly between numeric, visual, and symbolic representations of transformed sinusoidal functions.

Classroom Implementation Ideas
Targeted Skill Scaffold: Begin the unit on Level 1 as a quick check on amplitude and vertical shift, then progress to Level 2 and Level 3 as students learn horizontal compression/stretching and phase shifts.
Graph Reading Station: Set the problem source specifically to “From Graph” to give students dedicated practice reading graph peaks, troughs, and midlines without relying on equation formulas.
Pair-Share Warm-Up: Have students work in pairs on Level 3. Student A identifies vertical parameters (A and D), while Student B calculates horizontal parameters (B, Period, and C).

Key Discussion Prompts for Post-Activity Review

  1. How can you find the midline and amplitude of a plotted wave just by looking at its maximum and minimum y-values?
  2. Why is it helpful to factor out B from the inner expression Bx - C when determining the actual phase shift of a trigonometric function?
  3. How does changing the value of B impact the visual distance between consecutive peaks on the graph?
