Welcome to Word-to-Math Subtraction! This game is designed to help you become an expert at turning English words into subtraction equations. Some phrases are tricky because they flip the order of the numbers—this game will help you spot those every time. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

 

 

How to Play

1. Read (and Listen to) the Phrase
   In the center of the screen, you will see a phrase like:
   “Subtract 5 from 12” or “What is 20 take away 4?"
   Sound Control: Use the 🔊 icon in the top-right corner to turn the voice on or off.
   Repeat: Click the 📣 Listen to Phrase button at any time to hear it again.
   

2. Choose the Correct Equation
   Look at the four buttons below the phrase. You need to pick the one that represents exactly what the words are saying.
   The “Subtract From” Trap: Be careful! If the phrase says “Subtract 2 from 10,” the correct answer is 10 - 2, not 2 - 10.
   Other Choices: You’ll see “distractors,” like the numbers added together or the numbers in the wrong order.
   

3. Check Your Result
   Green Feedback: You translated the phrase perfectly! Your score will increase by 10 points.
   Red Feedback: Not quite right. The game will show you the correct order so you can learn the pattern for the next round.
   

4. Keep Going
   Click NEXT PHRASE ➔ to move on to a brand-new challenge.
