Subtraction with Pictures Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Subtraction with Pictures Worksheet/Game. Picture subtraction is a visual math strategy for beginners where objects in a picture are crossed out to solve subtraction problems. It helps visualize taking away a smaller quantity from a larger group to find the remainder, such as crossing out 3 apples from a set of 7, leaving 4. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play

  1. Start the Session
    Click the “START GAME” button:
Browsers usually block sounds until a user interacts with the page. Clicking this initializes the “Sound Engine” so you can hear the pops and dings.

  2. Understand the Goal
    Read the Instruction:
At the top, the game will tell you exactly how many items to “take away.” For example: “Take away 3 items. How many are left?"
    Look at the Math Sentence:
Below the icons, you’ll see the equation forming. The first box shows the Total number of items you started with.

  3. Take Away the Items
    Click the Icons:
Click on the apples or stars to “remove” them.
When you click an item, a red cross-line appears and the icon fades.
You will hear a “pop” sound.
    Watch the Middle Box:
As you click, the red box (the subtrahend) will count up. Make sure this number matches the instruction (e.g., if it says take away 3, click exactly 3 icons).
    Undo:
If you click too many, just click a crossed-out icon again to “put it back."

  4. Solve and Check
    Count the Remainder:
Count how many icons are not crossed out.
    Select the Answer:
    Click on the selected number.
    Submit:
    Click the “Check Answer” button.
    Correct:
You’ll hear a chime and the progress bar at the top will move.
    Incorrect/Missing Steps:
The game will give you a hint, like reminding you to cross out the correct number of items first.

Why this works for learners
This game uses the Visual Modeling strategy. By physically clicking to “remove” an item, the student internalizes that subtraction is the process of reducing a set, rather than just memorizing abstract numbers.
