How to Play the Subtract Money Game

  1. Start Your Shift
Click the “Start the Shift” button on the home screen. This will open the cash register and bring in your first customer.

  2. Read the Transaction
At the top of the game screen, you will see two boxes:
Item Price (Grey Box): This is how much the customer’s item costs.
Customer Paid (Green Box): This is the dollar bill the customer handed you (usually a $1, $5, $10, or $20 bill).

  3. Calculate the Change Due
To find the answer, you must subtract the Item Price from the Amount Paid.
    The Math Strategy: “Counting Up”
Instead of hard subtraction, many cashiers “count up” to the total.
Example: Item costs $3.60. Customer pays $5.00.
Add 40¢ to get to $4.00.
Add $1.00 to get to $5.00.
    Your Change: $1.40.

  4. Enter Your Answer
Use the input pill in the center of the screen:
    Left Box: Enter the Dollars.
Right Box: Enter the Cents (must be two digits, like 05 for 5 cents).
    Click “Give Change” to submit.

  5. Track Your Performance Look at the Register score in the top right:
Correct: How many customers you served perfectly.
Attempted: The total number of times you tried to give change.
The Goal: Try to keep your score “perfect” (e.g., 5/5). If you get it wrong, the attempted number goes up, but the correct number doesn’t.

This video gives a clear, step-by-step approach on understanding how to make change by counting up.
