Welcome to the Subtract 5 Challenge! This interactive practice module is designed to sharpen your mental math skills by focusing on subtracting five from numbers up to 20. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

 

 

How to Play

1. View Your Target
   In the center of the screen, you will see a subtraction problem (e.g., 12 - 5). This number will always be between 5 and 20.
   

2. Use the “Anchor” Strategy
   Since 5 is exactly half of 10, try these mental shortcuts:
   The Bridge: If the number is between 11 and 14, subtract to get to 10 first, then subtract the rest.
   Example: For 12 - 5, think 12 - 2 = 10, then 10 - 3 = 7.
   The Over-Subtract: Subtract 10 and then add 5 back.
   Example: For 14 - 5, think 14 - 10 = 4, then 4 + 5 = 9.
   

3. Select Your Answer
   Choose the correct result from the four options provided:
   Correct: The button glows Amber, you’ll hear a high-energy chime, and see a “High Five” message.
   Oops: The button turns Gray, and the game will give you a helpful hint to remember for next time.
   

4. Track Your Accuracy
   Keep an eye on the Accuracy counter in the top-right corner. It tracks your successful “High Fives” against your total attempts. Can you maintain a 100% accuracy rate as you speed up?
   

5. Keep Challenging Yourself
   After each answer, hit the NEXT CHALLENGE ➔ button. The more you play, the more these “High Five” jumps become second nature.
