Subtract 10 Worksheet/Game
Welcome to the Subtract 10 Challenge! This interactive trainer is designed to solidify your “Base-10” fluency—the most fundamental building block of mental arithmetic. By practicing these jumps, you aren’t just doing math; you’re training your eyes to recognize place value patterns instantly. Once you can “drop a ten” without thinking, you’ll find that larger addition and subtraction problems become significantly easier to visualize and solve. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play

  1. Identify the Problem
A challenge will appear in the center of the emerald-framed box (e.g., 24 - 10). These problems range from 10 to 30 to help you practice shifting the “tens” digit while keeping the “ones” digit steady.

  2. The “Place Value” Secret
Subtracting 10 is unique because it only affects one part of the number.
The Rule: Keep the “ones” (the last digit) exactly the same.
Simply look at the “tens” (the first digit) and reduce it by 1.
    Example (18 - 10):
    The 8 stays an 8.
The 1 in the tens place becomes 0.
    Result: 8

  3. Choose Your Answer
Select the matching number from the grid of four choices:
Correct: The button glows Emerald, a “Perfect Ten” chime rings out, and your accuracy count increases.
Oops: The button turns Rose, and a helpful hint reminds you to just “drop the ten” and keep the rest of the number as it is.

  4. Build Your Speed
Since the “ones” digit never changes, try to identify the answer before you even read the full problem. Your goal is to make this reaction automatic, like a reflex.

  5. Keep Moving
Press NEXT CHALLENGE ➔ to generate a new problem immediately. Can you maintain 100% accuracy through 20 rounds?

Tip:
Whenever you subtract 10, the end of the number stays the same. You are simply taking away one full “rod” of ten.
15 - 10 = 5
23 - 10 = 13
29 - 10 = 19
