Welcome to the Subtract 1 Challenge! This interactive tool is designed to help learners master the “Counting Back” strategy, a fundamental building block for arithmetic fluency. By focusing on the relationship between a number and its immediate predecessor, you’ll develop the speed and confidence needed to tackle more complex math problems with ease. Read the Problem
In the center of the screen, you will see a subtraction problem featuring a number between 1 and 20 (e.g., 14 - 1).
Use the “Step Back” Strategy
To find the answer, simply think of the number that comes right before the starting number when you are counting.
Example: For 14 - 1, think: “What number comes before 14?” The answer is 13.
Visual Aid: Imagine standing on a number line and taking exactly one hop to the left.
Choose Your Answer
Select the correct number from the four options provided in the grid:
Correct: The button will glow Arctic Blue, and a high-pitched chime will play to celebrate your success.
Incorrect: The button will turn Slate Gray, and the game will gently remind you to just count back one.
Track Your Accuracy
Monitor your progress using the Accuracy counter in the top right corner. It displays your correct answers versus your total attempts. Try to see how many you can get right in a row.
Keep Challenging Yourself
Once you’ve answered, the NEXT CHALLENGE ➔ button will appear. Click it to generate a new problem and keep the momentum going.

Why Subtracting 1 Matters
Subtracting 1 is the simplest form of subtraction, but it is incredibly important. It teaches you the sequence of numbers in reverse and prepares you for the “Inverse Property”—understanding that if 13 + 1 = 14, then 14 - 1 must be 13.
