Square Number Quiz/Game
In this game you are training your brain to memorize the perfect diagonal of the multiplication table—the numbers that result from multiplying a number by itself. Since these numbers appear on a perfect diagonal in a multiplication table, memorizing them is one of the most effective ways to build “math landmarks” in your head. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
How to play the Square Number Game
Start the Challenge
Click “Start Challenge” to begin. The game will immediately present you with a problem at the top of the screen.
Identify the Target
The game uses two different ways to ask for a square number. It will randomly switch between them:
Standard Form: 7 × 7
Exponent Form: 72 (The small “2” means “to the power of 2” or “squared”).
Both of these mean exactly the same thing: Multiply the number by itself.
Choose the Product
Below the problem, you will see four option cards.
Find the Product (the result of the multiplication).
Be careful. The distractors are designed to trick you. For 6 × 6, you might see 30 (6 × 5) or 42 (6 × 7) as options.
Why memorize square numbers?
They Are Math “Landmarks”. When you know your squares, you have fixed points on the multiplication table. If you know 7 × 7 = 49, then solving 7 × 8 becomes much easier—it’s just 49 + 7. They act as anchors that help you navigate more complex calculations without getting lost.
This video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to learn square numbers.
