Solve Quadratic Function Game
In this game, You are given a quadratic function h(x) and a target value. Your goal is to find the two values of x (the roots) that make the equation true. Scroll down for a detailed explanation.

How to Play the Solve Quadratic Function Game

  1. Set the Equation to Zero
In the game, you’ll see something like h(x) = x2 + 5x + 10 and a target like h(x) = 4. You cannot factor this yet. You must subtract the target from both sides so that the right side becomes 0.
    Math: x2 + 5x + 10 = 4 → x2 + 5x + 6 = 02.

  2. Factor the Quadratic
    Now, find two numbers that:
Multiply to the constant (c)Add up to the middle coefficient (b)

  3. Solve for x (The Zero Product Property)
    If you factored the equation into (x + 2)(x + 3) = 0, then for the whole thing to be zero, either (x + 2) or (x + 3) must be zero.
    If x + 2 = 0, then x = -2
    If x + 3 = 0, then x = -3

How to Enter Your Answer?
The game requires both solutions.
Type them into the box separated by a comma or a space (e.g., -2, -3).

Tip: Don’t forget to flip the signs of your factors! If your factor is (x - 5), your root is 5.

Example
Display: h(x) = x2 - x - 18 | Target: h(x) = 2

  1. Move the Target: Subtract 2 from -18. Now you have x2 - x - 20 = 0.
  2. Factor: What multiplies to -20 and adds to -1? (Hint: -5 and 4).
  3. Solve: The factors are (x - 5)(x + 4), so the roots are 5 and -4.
  4. Input: 5, -4
