Rounding Grade 4 Game
Practice 4th-grade place value rounding to the nearest ten thousand and hundred thousand with this free interactive math game. Includes step-by-step explanations and strategy guides. Scroll down for a detailed explanation.
How to Play the Game
Identify the Target Place Value: Check the top purple badge to see if you are rounding to the nearest 10,000 or 100,000.
Locate the Neighbor Digit: Look at the digit immediately to the right of your target place value (the Thousands place when rounding to 10,000, or the Ten Thousands place when rounding to 100,000).
Apply the Rounding Rule:
If the neighbor digit is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, round UP (add 1 to the target digit).
If the neighbor digit is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, keep the target digit the SAME.
Zero Out: Replace all digits to the right of the target place value with zeros.
Select Your Answer: Click the matching option in the grid. If incorrect, review the step-by-step breakdown panel before moving to the next challenge!

Educational Summary
The Place Value Power-Up game develops procedural fluency and conceptual understanding for 4th-grade place-value concepts. Rounding large multi-digit numbers to benchmark values (such as 10,000 and 100,000) often poses a hurdle for students transitioning from 3-digit and 4-digit arithmetic. This game bridges abstract rules with clear visual steps by highlighting the relationship between a target digit and its “neighboring” place value to the right. By offering immediate, corrective feedback, the game targets common misconceptions—such as rounding to the incorrect place value or changing digits to the left—and builds estimation skills essential for real-world problem-solving.
Teacher’s Guide
Target Audience & Standards Alignment
Target Grade: Grade 4 (also suitable for Grade 5 review or Grade 3 intervention)
Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.A.3 (Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place).
Classroom Implementation Ideas
Whole-Class Warm-Up: Project the game onto an interactive whiteboard to start a math lesson. Have students write their answers on individual mini-whiteboards and hold them up before revealing the correct choice on screen to evaluate class-wide readiness.
Differentiated Station Rotation: Assign the game during guided math stations. Students who need scaffolding can toggle open the Show Rounding Rules checklist, while advanced learners can enable the 30-second timer to build speed and automaticity.
Exit Ticket Challenge: Use the game during the last 5–10 minutes of class. Challenge students to earn a streak of at least 3 correct answers in a row before transitioning.
Facilitation & Discussion Prompts
“Why does a digit of 5 in the neighbor’s place make us round UP to the next benchmark instead of staying at the lower one?”
“When rounding 496,210 to the nearest 10,000, what happens when you add 1 to the 9 in the ten-thousands place?"
