Rounding Up with 9’s Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Rounding 9’s Worksheet/Game. This game is a two-step challenge designed to help you master the “Cascade Effect”—those tricky moments where rounding up one digit causes a chain reaction in the others. This happens when a 9 in the target place value rounds up, it becomes a 0, and 1 is added to the digit to its left. This “cascade” effect continues leftward if multiple 9s are present. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to play the Rounding Up with 9’s Game

  1. Choose Your Mission
From the Main Menu, select the difficulty level:
Nearest Ten: Focuses on numbers like 397. Rounding the tens place might change the hundreds.
Nearest Hundred: Focuses on numbers like 962. Rounding the hundreds might push the number into the thousands.
Chain Reaction: These are numbers like 996. Rounding to the nearest ten triggers a “double roll-over” all the way to 1,000.
Mix: A randomized blend of all three modes.

  2. Step One: The Decision
Once a number appears, look at the neighbor digit (the number to the right of the place you are rounding to).
STAY DOWN: Choose this if the neighbor is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4.
ROUND UP: Choose this if the neighbor is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9.

  3. Step Two: Solve
If your decision was correct, the game asks you for the final result. This is where the “9” roll-over happens.
Example: If you are rounding 397 to the nearest ten, and you chose “Round Up,” you must think: 9 tens + 1 ten = 10 tens (which is 1 hundred).
Type your answer (e.g., 400) into the box and hit Submit.

Tips
The Domino Effect: Whenever you round a 9 up, it always becomes a 0, and the digit to its left increases by 1.
Watch the Neighbor: In “Nearest Hundred” mode, you ignore the ones place and only look at the tens place to decide whether to round up.
The Chain: For a number like 998, rounding to the nearest ten makes the tens a zero, which makes the hundreds a zero, which creates a 1 in the thousands place.
