Represent Numbers Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Represent Numbers Worksheet/Game. This game helps students to visualize numbers as physical quantities. In this Block Builder game, the student is given a target number and must select the correct number of Ten-Rods and Single Units to match it. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to play the Represent Numbers Worksheet/Game

  1. Identify the Target
Look at the large number in the pink Target Number box.
Example: If the target is 35, you need to build exactly that amount.

  2. Choose Your Blocks
Use the buttons on the left to add blocks to the workspace:
+ Add Rod: Adds a tall pink rod. Each rod represents 10 units.
+ Add Unit: Adds a small pink square. Each square represents 1 unit.

  3. Build the Number
A great strategy is to look at the digits:
The Tens Digit (Left): Tells you how many Rods to add.
The Ones Digit (Right): Tells you how many Units to add.
    Example for 35: Add 3 Rods (10 + 10 + 10 = 30) and 5 Units (1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 5).

  4. Check
Once your workspace looks correct, click the green Check Build button.
Correct: You’ll hear a victory chime and move to the next number!
Too Many/Not Enough: The screen will shake. Look at your workspace and count again.
You can click Clear All if you want to start that number over.

Tips for Teachers: “The Swap”
Sometimes a student might try to represent 24 using 24 single units.
The Teaching Moment: While technically correct in value, explain that we should always try to be as efficient as possible.
The Rule: If you have 10 units, you must swap them for a rod. This reinforces the “regrouping” concept used later in addition and subtraction.
