Related Rates Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Related Rates Worksheet/Game. This game requires you to solve related rates problems in calculus that involve finding the rate at which one quantity changes by relating it to other quantities whose rates of change are known, typically with respect to time. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
The Start Screen
When you first open the application, you’ll see the Initialize button.
The Game Loop
Once initialized, you are presented with a series of “Events” (questions).
The Formula Box: At the top of the card, you’ll see the core mathematical formula required for the scenario (e.g., the volume of a sphere or the Pythagorean theorem).
The Task: Below the formula is the word problem. It provides specific rates of change (like dV/dt or dx/dt) and asks you to find a missing rate at a specific moment in time.
Multiple Choice: Select the correct numerical answer from the grid below.
Feedback & Learning
The game is designed to help you learn from mistakes:
Correct Answer: If you pick the right option, the button turns green, and your Efficiency (accuracy percentage) increases.
Incorrect Answer: If you pick the wrong option, the button turns red, and the correct answer is highlighted in green.
View Steps: Crucially, if you get a question wrong, a “View Steps” button will appear. Clicking this opens an overlay that breaks down the differentiation and substitution required to solve that specific problem.
Navigation
Next Event: After answering a question, click “Next Event” to move to the next randomized problem in the queue.
Exit to Menu: If you want to reset your progress or reshuffle the questions, click the “Exit to Menu” link at the very bottom. This will clear your current efficiency and take you back to the splash screen.
Completion: After completing all 10 events, you’ll receive a final efficiency rating, and the game will reset.
