Rational Number Line Game
Practice plotting fractions, decimals, and negative integers on horizontal and vertical number lines in this interactive Grade 6 math game. Play for free! Scroll down for a detailed explanation.
How to Play the Game
Identify the Target: Look at the target rational number displayed in the box at the top (it can be an integer, decimal, or fraction, positive or negative).
Examine the Axis: Check whether the number line for the current round is horizontal or vertical.
Place Your Pin: Click directly on the number line where you believe the target number belongs. A blue pin will appear at your selected point.
Submit: Click the Confirm Placement button to check your estimate.
Review Feedback:
A green pin shows the exact mathematical location.
A chime sound indicates a correct placement; a buzz sound indicates an attempt that fell outside the precision window.
Next Challenge: Click Next Challenge to update your score ratio (Correct / Total) and advance to a new problem.

Educational Summary & Teacher’s Guide
Core Mathematical ConceptThis game aligns with 6th-grade Common Core Math Standards (specifically CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.NS.C.6). It helps students extend their understanding of positive and negative numbers to the full rational number system, teaching them to locate and plot fractions, decimals, and integers across both horizontal and vertical orientations.
Key Learning Objectives
Rational Number Fluency: Recognizing the relative magnitudes of positive and negative fractions (e.g., \(-\frac{3}{4}, \frac{7}{2}\)) and decimals (e.g., -1.25, 2.5).
Spatial Reasoning across Axes: Transitioning fluently between horizontal number lines (x-axis foundation) and vertical number lines (y-axis/thermometer foundation), preparing students for 4-quadrant coordinate graphing.
Estimation & Magnitude: Developing intuition for values between whole integers (e.g., identifying that -3.5 lies exactly halfway between -3 and -4, not -3 and -2).
