How to Play the R-Controlled Vowels Game?

  1. Listen to the Secret Word:
At the start of each round, the game automatically pronounces a target word aloud.

  2. Look at the Word Puzzle:
A word will appear in the center card with its r-controlled vowel team replaced by a blank line (for example, f_ _ n or b_ _ d).

  3. Find the Missing Team:
Look at the five vowel options at the bottom of the screen: ar, er, ir, or, ur. Click or tap the button that correctly completes the spelling of the word you just heard.

  4. Instant Word Evaluation:
If you choose correctly: The button pops green and the narrator celebrates your spot-on spelling! The blank space instantly fills with the correct letters before a new round begins.
If you miss a team: The button shakes red, and the game displays the complete word while the narrator reads out the correct vowel team so you can learn its shape.

  5. Repeat the Audio Track:
If you need to hear the phonetic blending or vowel breakdown again, click the speaker icon (🔊) inside the dashed box at any time.

  6. Watch Your Tracker:
Keep an eye on your progress using the Score: [Correct] / [Total Attempts] banner at the top of the card.

R-Controlled Vowels
An R-controlled vowel (frequently called the “Bossy R” rule in early childhood classrooms) is a foundational phonics rule that explains what happens when a vowel is immediately followed by the letter “R” in a syllable.

When the letter “R” sits next to a vowel, it takes total control of the sound. It completely blocks the vowel from making its standard short sound (like the ah in cat) or long sound (like the ay in cake). Instead, the two letters morph together to create a brand-new, unique sound.

  1. The 3 Core Sound Buckets
While there are five traditional vowels, they break down into three distinct sounds when the Bossy R takes over:

The “AR” Sound (The Pirate)
This team makes a deep, open sound where your mouth drops down wide. It sounds exactly like its letter name: /ɑːr/.
Examples: star, farm, park, shark, yard.

The “OR” Sound (The Ocean Wave)
This team forces your lips to round forward into a tight circle, making the /ɔːr/ sound.
Examples: fork, horn, storm, cord, short.

The “ER, IR, UR” Sound (The Tricky Twins)
This is the sneakiest part of the rule for young readers and spellers. Even though they look different on paper, -er, -ir, and -ur make the exact same phonetic sound: /ɜːr/. When teaching kids, we explain that their lips pull tight and they make an “engine grunting” sound (errrr).
ER Examples: fern, tiger, perch, her
IR Examples: bird, girl, shirt, twirl
UR Examples: surf, burn, hurt, fur

  1. Side-by-Side Structural Shifts
To help kids understand why this rule is so “bossy,” show them how the vowel sound completely self-destructs the moment an R walks into the room:
The Closed Word (Short Vowel) The Bossy R Word (New Sound!) What Happened?
cat (“c-ah-t”) car (“c-AR”) The short “ah” sound vanishes into a pirate cheer.
fist (“f-ih-st”) first (“f-ER-st”) The short “ih” changes completely to the twin er sound.
bun (“b-uh-n”) burn (“b-ER-n”) The short “uh” is captured by the R to make an err sound.
not (“n-ah-t”) north (“n-OR-th”) The open “ah” rounds out tightly into or.
  1. The Anchor Chant for Kids
When teaching this to early learners, use this catchy structural rhyme to get them in the habit of scanning ahead for the letter R
“When a vowel is matching steps, walking down the track,
Watch out for the Bossy R standing at the back!
It runs right up, it steals the sound, it makes the vowel freeze,
And makes a brand-new sound that sounds like ‘AR’, ‘OR’, or ‘ER’ with ease!"
