How to play the Powers of 10 Game
The Objective
Your goal is to transform the number in the center of the screen (starting at 1) until it matches the Target Power shown in the top box.
Read the Target
The target is written in scientific notation: 10n.
Positive Exponents: Represent large whole numbers (e.g., 103 = 1,000).
Negative Exponents: Represent small decimals (e.g., 10-2 = 0.01).
Shift the Decimal
Use the two primary action buttons to “drift” your decimal point:
SHIFT LEFT (Divide by 10): Moves the decimal one place to the left. Use this if your target has a negative exponent.
SHIFT RIGHT (Multiply by 10): Moves the decimal one place to the right. Use this if your target has a positive exponent.
Verify Match
Once you believe your displayed number (in green) matches the target power, click VERIFY MATCH.
Success: You’ll hear a rising tone, your streak will increase, and a new target will generate.
Failure: You’ll hear a low “thud,” and your streak will reset to zero.
Tips
Count the Zeros: For positive exponents, the exponent tells you exactly how many zeros follow the 1. For example, 105 is 1 with five zeros: 100,000.
The Decimal “Jump”: For negative exponents, the absolute value of the exponent tells you how many places the decimal moved from the right of the 1. For example, 10-3 means the decimal jumped 3 times to the left: 0.001.
Watch the Feedback: If you get an answer wrong, the game will give you a hint (e.g., “Shift RIGHT”) to help you understand the relationship between the two numbers.
