Understanding the Terminology
An exponent problem is written in the form bn, where: b is the Base: This is the number you multiply. n is the Exponent (or power): This positive number tells you how many times you multiply the base by itself. For example, in the expression 53, the base is 5 and the exponent is 3.

The Calculation Rule
To calculate the value of bn, you multiply the base (b) by itself n times.

Special Case: Exponent of 1
Any number raised to the power of 1 is simply the base itself.

Special Case: Exponent of 0
Any number raised to the power of 0 is 1.

This video gives a clear, step-by-step approach to explain what is an exponent.
