Polygon Perimeter & Missing Side Game
Master finding total polygon perimeter and missing side lengths in 3rd grade! Features visual shape models, step-by-step strategies, and instant feedback aligned to CCSS 3.MD.D.8. Scroll down for a detailed explanation.

How to Play the Game

  1. Select Your Mode
Level 1 (Find Total Perimeter): Given all outer side lengths of a shape, add them together to calculate the total perimeter.
Level 2 (Find Missing Side): Given the total perimeter and all but one side length, find the value of the missing side (?).
Level 3 (Mixed Challenge): A random mix of total perimeter and missing side questions using various polygons.

  2. Inspect the Polygon
Examine the generated polygon (triangles, rectangles, trapezoids, pentagons, or L-shapes).
Look at the labels around the outer edges:
In Total Perimeter mode, every outer edge displays a measurement unit (e.g., 6 cm, 4 cm).
In Missing Side mode, look for the badge in the top right displaying the Total Perimeter and find the side marked with ?.

  3. Calculate & Choose
Work out your answer on scrap paper using additive or subtractive strategies.
Select one of the 4 multiple-choice answers in the option grid.
Get immediate visual and audio feedback, along with a full step-by-step operational breakdown showing how to get the correct answer.

  4. Use Strategy Hints
Click the “Need a hint? Review Perimeter Rules!” header at any time to open quick reference notes on calculating perimeter and finding missing sides.

Educational Summary & Teacher’s Guide
Overview
Perimeter Patrol: Polygon Challenge provides interactive practice for 3rd-grade students learning to understand perimeter as an attribute of plane figures. By pairing clean visual representations of both regular and irregular polygons with dynamic variable side lengths, the game develops both basic addition fluency and early algebraic thinking (solving for an unknown variable in a perimeter equation).

Standard Alignment
Common Core State Standards (CCSS):
3.MD.D.8: Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand Perimeter as Boundary Measurement: Define perimeter as the total linear distance around the outside edge of a 2D shape.
  2. Calculate Total Perimeter: Sum the side lengths of various 3- to 6-sided polygons (triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and L-shapes).
  3. Solve for Unknown Side Lengths: Utilize part-whole reasoning ($Total = Known\ Sides + Unknown\ Side$) to determine a missing length using subtraction.

Classroom Implementation Guide

  1. Instructional Sequencing & Scaffolding
Day 1–2 (Level 1 Practice): Use Level 1 as an independent or partner station when introducing the concept of perimeter. Focus on ensuring students count and add every outer side without skipping edges on complex shapes like L-shapes.
Day 3–4 (Level 2 Transition): Introduce Level 2 after students master basic perimeter addition. Emphasize two-step problem solving:
    Step 1: Sum of Known Sides = s_1 + s_2 + s_3
Step 2: Missing Side = Total Perimeter} - Sum of Known Sides
  2. Visual & Concrete Supports
When introducing the game, have students use mini-whiteboards alongside their screen:
Color-Coding Strategy: Advise students to draw the shape on their board and highlight known sides in blue and the missing side (?) in orange.
  3. Differentiated Station Ideas
Support / Tier 2: Limit play to Level 1 with 3-sided or 4-sided shapes (Triangles & Rectangles). Have students use unit cubes to lay along the perimeter of printed shapes matching the game screen.
Extension / Acceleration: Have students who master Level 3 draw a different polygon on grid paper that has the exact same total perimeter as the problem shown on screen.
