What is 27% of 55?
Step 1: Convert the Percentage to a Decimal
To convert a percentage to a decimal, you drop the percent sign (%) and move the decimal point two places to the left (which is the same as dividing by 100).
27% → 0.27
Step 2: Multiply the Decimal by the Number
The word “of” in a percentage problem almost always means multiplication.
Multiply the decimal value (from Step 1) by the number you are working with.
0.27 × 55 = 14.85
So, 27% of 55 = 14.85
Alternative Method: Using Fractions
If the percentage is a common fraction equivalent (like 50%, 25% or 10%), you can sometimes solve it quicker using the fraction form.
25% is 1/4
Find 25% of 16: 1/4 × 16 = 4
