Welcome to Pattern Completion Worksheet/Game. This game is a logic-building game designed to help students recognize and predict sequences in the pattern: ABAB or ABC. By identifying the “core” of a repeating pattern, kindergarten students develop early algebraic thinking and predictive reasoning skills. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

 

 

Game Objective
The goal is to complete the sequence by identifying which icon comes next in the pattern. You win by successfully filling the empty “target slot” with the correct icon.

How to play the Pattern Completion Worksheet/Game

1. Pick Your Mode:
   ABAB Patterns: A simple alternating pattern (e.g., 🍎, 🍌, 🍎, 🍌).
   ABC Patterns: A sequence with three repeating items (e.g., 🚗, ✈️, 🚂, 🚗, ✈️, 🚂).
   Mixed Patterns: ABAB or ABC patterns.
   

2. Study the Row:
   Look at the icons displayed on the screen. Read them out loud (or listen to the game read them) to hear the rhythm of the pattern.
   

3. Identify the Gap:
   Find the blinking blue box with the question mark (?). This is the “missing link” you need to provide.
   

4. Make Your Choice:
   Look at the larger icons at the bottom of the screen. Tap the one you think completes the pattern correctly.
   If you are right: The icon will move into the row, turn green, and the game will celebrate!
   If you are wrong: The icon will fade out. Just look at the row again and try a different one.
   

5. Keep Going:
   After you find the correct answer, the game will automatically generate a brand-new pattern for you after a 3-second pause.
   

Teacher’s Tip: The “Rhythm” Strategy
Patterns are easier to solve if students say them out loud like a song. For an ABC pattern, encourage the student to chant: “Apple, Banana, Grape… Apple, Banana, ____!” Usually, their brain will naturally fill in the “Grape” before they even consciously think about it!
