Shape Partition Game
Partition shapes into equal areas and express them as fractions! An interactive 3rd-grade math game for learning unit fractions and visual shape models. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the Game

  1. Select a Game Mode from the Main Menu:
Level 1 (Identify the Fraction): Look at the partitioned shape on the canvas. Read the prompt to determine either the unit fraction representing a single equal part or the total fraction of the shaded blue area. Click the matching stacked fraction option to answer.
Level 2 (Partition & Shade Lab): Read the target fraction requirement at the top (e.g., \(\frac{3}{4}\)). Use the + and - buttons to divide the shape into the target number of equal parts. Tap individual sections of the shape to shade or unshade them, then click Check Answer ✓.
  2. Gameplay Controls:
    Adjusting Partitions: Use + or - to change denominators (2, 3, 4, 6, or 8).
Shading Regions: Click or tap inside any partition boundary on the canvas to toggle blue shading.
Audio & Navigation: Tap 🔊 in the top header to toggle sound effects, or click 🏠 to return to the menu.

Educational Summary
Shape Partition Master provides a concrete visual representation of fraction area decomposition. By interacting directly with 2D geometric shapes (circles, rectangles, and square grids), students develop a conceptual understanding of how whole shapes are divided into parts of equal size and how unit fractions form the building blocks of all fractions.
Target Grade Level: Grade 3 (Ages 8–9)
Core Math Concepts: Equal area partitioning, unit fractions (\(\frac{1}{b}\)), fraction representation (\(\frac{a}{b}\)), numerators as count of parts, denominators as total equal parts.
Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Alignment:
3.G.A.2: Partition shapes into parts with equal areas. Express the area of each part as a unit fraction of the whole shape.
3.NF.A.1: Understand a fraction \(\frac{1}{b}\) as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction \(\frac{a}{b}\) as the quantity formed by a parts of size \(\frac{1}{b}\).

Teacher’s Guide & Classroom Integration
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:

  1. Decompose geometric shapes into 2, 3, 4, 6, or 8 equal area regions.
  2. Identify a single equal part of a shape as a unit fraction (\(\frac{1}{b}\)).
  3. Build and represent non-unit fractions (\(\frac{a}{b}\)) by combining equal shaded parts of a shape.

Recommended Classroom Uses
Interactive Whiteboard Warm-Up: Project Level 1 during daily math talks. Ask students to identify the denominator first by counting total equal parts before identifying the numerator.
Guided Math Small Group: Use Level 2 alongside physical manipulatives (such as fraction tiles or paper cutouts). Have students recreate the virtual game challenge on paper by folding or drawing equal partitions before checking their work in the app.
Formative Assessment: Observe Level 2 gameplay to check if students confuse numerators and denominators when adjusting the partition controls vs. tapping to shade.

Guiding Discussion Questions
“If a rectangle is divided into 6 equal parts, what fraction of the total area does just one of those parts represent?”
“What happens to the size of each individual part as you increase the number of partitions from 2 to 8?”
“How many unit fractions of \(\frac{1}{4}\) does it take to make \(\frac{3}{4}\) of a whole shape?”
