Part-Part-Whole Bar Models Game
Master visual part-part-whole bar models with this interactive math game! Practice finding missing addends, inverse operations, and whole sums across 3 difficulty levels. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the Game

  1. Select a Level:
Level 1 (Beginner): Focuses on numbers up to 20 (ideal for early grade levels).
Level 2 (Intermediate): Expands to numbers up to 50.
Level 3 (Advanced): Offers higher-value practice with numbers up to 100.
  2. Examine the Bar Model:
Top Bar (Whole): Represents the total sum (blue bar).
Bottom Row (Parts): Divided proportionally into Part 1 (green) and Part 2 (orange).
Identify which value contains the dashed box with the question mark (?):
Missing Whole: Finding the total of both parts (Part_1 + Part_2 = ?).
    Missing Addend: Finding one of the bottom parts (? + Part_2 = Whole or Part_1 + ? = Whole).
  3. Select Your Answer:
Review the equation shown below the bar model.
Click the correct number option from the multiple-choice grid.
Correct Answer: Earns score points, builds your multiplier streak, reveals the missing number inside the bar model, and displays the equation breakdown.
Incorrect Answer: Resets your streak and provides a hint showing whether to use addition or inverse subtraction.
  4. Advance & Return:
Click “Next Model ➔” to load a newly generated bar model problem.
Click the Home (🏠) icon in the header to return to the Main Menu and switch difficulty levels.

Educational Summary
Part-Part-Whole Bar Models is a math game designed to build algebraic intuition and conceptual fluency with addition and subtraction. Based on visual representation techniques (popularized by Singapore Math pedagogy), bar modeling helps students see numbers as whole quantities composed of smaller parts.

Target Grade Levels: Grade 1 to Grade 4 (Ages 6–10)
Core Mathematical Concepts:
Additive Relationships: Part + Part = Whole
Inverse Subtraction Relationships: Whole - Part = Missing\ Part
Algebraic Thinking: Solving single-variable missing addend equations (x + b = c or a + x = c).
Pedagogical Benefits:
Proportional Reasoning: The lengths of the part bars dynamically reflect their relative values to reinforce magnitude intuition.
Scaffolded Progression: Tiered levels allow students to master basic number facts (<20) before advancing to multi-digit place value math (<100).
Dual Representation: Combines visual bar models with numerical algebraic equations simultaneously.

Teacher’s Guide
Standard Alignment
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.A.1: Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.D.8: Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.A.1: Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing.

Key Vocabulary to Introduce
Whole: The total combined quantity of all parts.
Part / Addend: One of the numbers being combined to make the whole.
Missing Addend: The unknown part in an addition or subtraction equation.
Inverse Operations: Math operations that undo each other (e.g., using subtraction to find a missing addition part).

Classroom Implementation Strategies

  1. Explicit Instruction / Anchor Charts:
Use Level 1 on a smartboard to demonstrate how bar models work.
Draw two clear rules on the board:
Missing top bar (Whole)? Add the two parts together.
Missing bottom bar (Part)? Subtract the known part from the whole.
  2. Small-Group Math Centers:
Set up tablets or laptops at a math center for independent student practice.
Have students keep a scratchpad next to their device to write down the corresponding subtraction equation when solving missing addends.
  3. Classroom Discussion & Formative Assessment Questions:
  4. “Why does the green bar change size compared to the orange bar?"
  5. “If you know the whole and one part, why do you subtract instead of add?"
  6. “Can you write a short story problem that fits this bar model?"
