The shape and orientation of a parabola are entirely determined by its quadratic equation, specifically which variable is squared and the sign of its leading coefficient. Here is a summary of the four possible directions, along with an interactive tool to explore them yourself:

Vertical Parabolas:
These are defined by equations where x is squared, like y = ax² + bx + c.

1. Opens Upward: Occurs when a > 0 (a positive leading coefficient). The parabola looks like a “cup” holding water.
   
2. Opens Downward: Occurs when a < 0 (a negative leading coefficient). The parabola looks like an “umbrella."
   

Horizontal Parabolas: These are defined by equations where y is squared, like x = ay² + by + c.
3. Opens to the Right: Occurs when a > 0 (a positive leading coefficient).
4. Opens to the Left: Occurs when a < 0 (a negative leading coefficient).

How to Play

1. Study the Equation:
   A new quadratic equation will appear in the center terminal box. It might look like standard form (y = ax² + bx + c), vertex form (y = a(x-h)² + k), or it might even be a sideways equation starting with x = .
   

2. Predict the Opening:
   Look at the structure of the equation to decide if the parabola opens Upward, Downward, Leftward, or Rightward.
   

3. Lock In Your Answer:
   Click one of the four directional buttons (▲, ▼, ◀, or ▶).
   

4. Read the Feedback:
   Correct? You score 25 points and grow your win streak.
   Incorrect? No worries. Your streak resets, but the game immediately breaks down the step-by-step math so you can see exactly what to look for next time.
   

5. Keep Moving:
