How to Play p vs q Game
Welcome to the agency, Detective! Your mission is to help solve the mystery of the missing letters. Lowercase p and q are masters of disguise because they look like mirror images of each other.

Follow these steps to crack the case:

Step 1: Inspect the Target Card
A card will appear showing a mysterious picture emoji and a word with a missing first letter (marked by a orange ?). Can’t read the word yet? Click the Loudspeaker button (📢) to hear the secret word read aloud!

Step 2: Make Your Choice
Click the big p or q button to guess which letter fits perfectly into the blank space.
If you are right: You’ll hear a happy chime, earn a point, and get a helpful tip on why that letter belongs there!
If you make a mistake: Don’t worry! The game will give you a friendly reminder clue so you can ace it next time.

Step 3: Advance and Close the Case
Click Next Word ➡️ to move to the next mystery. Once you successfully sort through 10 words, the case is officially closed, and you will see your final Detective Score! Click Play Again 🔄 to shuffle the deck and beat your high score.

The “Thumbs Down” Hand Trick
Unlike b and d (which use a “thumbs up” sign), p and q are descending letters with tails that drop below the line. Therefore, this trick requires making a “thumbs down” sign with both hands.

Set Up the Hands
Have the child put both hands out in front of them, make loose fists, and point both of their thumbs straight down toward the floor.
The Left Hand forms the “p”: Look closely at the left hand. The circle of the fist sits on top, and the thumb points down on the left side of the circle, mimicking a lowercase p.
The Right Hand forms the “q”: Look at the right hand. The circle of the fist sits on top, and the thumb points down on the right side of the circle, mimicking a lowercase q.

How to Teach the Memory Phrasing
To help kids remember which hand is which without getting mixed up, teach them to read their hands from left to right (just like reading a book) while saying alphabetical order:
“p comes before q!"
Have them look at their left hand (p), then look at their right hand (q). Because we read from left to right, p naturally comes first, and q naturally comes second.
