This Order of Parentheses Game/Worksheet with Integers is a great way to put your skills to the test in a fun environment. By practicing, you’ll start to work out the answers efficiently.
Order of Parentheses Quiz/Game-Integer
Welcome to Parentheses Power (Integer Version). The game focuses on the Order of Operations (PEMDAS), but with the added challenge of negative integers and nested parentheses.
This game helps you master the parentheses rule: parentheses indicate the highest priority in the order of operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS), requiring that calculations inside them are performed first. When nested, solve from the innermost parentheses to the outermost. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
Check out the following Order of Operations Games/Quizzes for the complete PEMDAS series.
How to play the Order of Parentheses Game
Choose Your Challenge
Simple Parentheses: One set of brackets to solve.
With & Without: Mixes problems that have brackets with those that rely on standard operation priority.
Nested Parentheses: The ultimate test. You must work from the innermost brackets toward the outside.
The “Inside-Out” Rule
When you see nested brackets like ( 10 - (15 + 5) ), you cannot solve the 10 - part yet.
You must solve the deepest layer first.
Simplify One Step at a Time
Don’t jump to the final answer. You must type the entire equation again, but with one calculation simplified.
Problem: -2 * ( 10 - (15 + 5) )
Step 1: Solve the inner (15 + 5).
What you type: -2 * ( 10 - 20 )
Mastering the Signs
Since this is the Integer Edition, you have to be careful with negative numbers:
Adding/Subtracting:
Watch out for “double negatives” (e.g., 10 - (-5) = 15).
Multiplying/Dividing:
Pos × Neg = Neg
Neg × Neg = Pos
Tips
Notation: If an answer is negative and follows an operator, the game displays it as (-5) to keep things tidy.
Flexible Typing: The game is smart. You can type -2 * (10 - 20) or -2*(10-20)—it ignores spaces and extra parentheses when checking your work.
Streak: A single mistake resets your streak to 0. Take your time to double-check your signs before hitting “Validate Step."
