This Order of Ops (Mult/Div) Game/Worksheet is a great way to put your skills to the test in a fun environment. By practicing, you’ll start to work out the answers efficiently.
Order of Ops (Mult/Div) Quiz/Game
Welcome to Order Ops (Mult/Div). In this game, you goal is to simplify multiplication and division problems by solving them line by line. This game helps you master the “equal priority” rule: when you only have multiplication and division, you always solve from left to right. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
Check out the following Order of Operations Games/Quizzes for the complete PEMDAS series.
How to play the Order of Ops (Mult/Div) Game
Look at the “Active Step”:
This is your current math problem ((e.g., 10 × 4 ÷ 5).
Pick the First Operation
Look at the operation furthest to the left. In our example (10 × 4 ÷ 5), the multiplication comes first because it is on the left.
Step 1: Calculate 10 × 4 = 40.
Step 2: Keep the rest of the problem. Your new line is 40 ÷ 5.
Type the Simplified Line
Type your new line into the input box.
You don’t need to worry about spaces; “40/5” and “40 / 5” both work.
Press Enter or click Validate Step.
Follow the Trail
Each time you are correct, the old line moves up into the “History Trail” in gray text, and your new line becomes the active problem. This shows you exactly how the expression is shrinking.
Finish the Problem
Keep going until only one number remains. If you solve the last step correctly, the number will turn green and you’ll hear a success chime.
Streaks and Feedback
✅ Correct: The line moves up into the “History,” and you get a satisfying chime.
❌ Wrong Order: If you try to add before you multiply (e.g., typing 15 * 2 in the example above), your Streak will reset to 0.
🔥 Streaks: To grow your streak, you must finish a whole problem without making a single mistake.
The Rule: Left to Right
A common mistake is thinking Multiplication (×) always comes before Division (÷) because of the order of letters in PEMDAS/BODMAS.
Think of them as partners:
They have the same power level.
The one that appears first on the left gets solved first.
The game is specially designed so every “left-to-right” step results in a perfect whole number.
“Check your math or the order!”: This error usually means you tried to solve an operation on the right before the one on the left, or there was a simple calculation error.
Division Symbols: In this game, division is shown as / and multiplication as *.
Why “Left-to-Right” Matters for Multiplication & Division
Just like addition and subtraction, multiplication (*) and division (/) are on the same level of priority.
Many students mistakenly believe that they must multiply before they divide because “M” comes before “D” in PEMDAS. This game helps correct that by requiring the leftmost operation first.
Example: 12 / 3 * 2
Wrong Way: Jumping to 3 * 2 first would give you 12 / 6 = 2.
Right Way: Going left to right, you do 12 / 3 = 4. Then 4 * 2 = 8.
