Order Absolute Values & Integers Game
Practice ordering positive numbers, negative numbers, and absolute value expressions in ascending or descending order with real-time number line feedback. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the Game

  1. Select a Level:
Level 1: Basics containing positive integers, negative integers, zero, and simple absolute values like |-5|.
    Level 2: Advanced challenges with multi-step expressions like -|-3|, |a - b|, and double negatives -(-a).
  2. Read the Ordering Direction:
Check the top banner badge to see whether you must arrange the cards in Ascending (smallest to largest) or Descending (largest to smallest) order.
  3. Reorder the Cards:
Drag & Drop: Click and drag any card left or right to swap its position.
Arrow Buttons: Click the ◀ or ▶ buttons on any card to shift it one step sideways.
  4. Submit & Review:
Click Check Order ✓ to lock in your answer.
View the calculated values on each card and study the interactive Number Line visual at the bottom to verify where each value lands relative to zero.

Educational Summary
Order Absolute Values helps students bridge the gap between abstract symbolic expressions and their concrete numerical values on a number line. Students frequently confuse absolute value bars as simply “removing negative signs,” leading to mistakes when dealing with terms like -|x| or |a - b|. This game reinforces the concept that absolute value represents distance from zero and requires calculating the value inside the bars before determining order.

Target Grade Levels: Grades 6–8 (Ages 11–14)
Core Mathematical Concepts:
Absolute value as distance from zero: |x| ≥ 0
Distinguishing between inside and outside negation: |-a| vs. -|a|
Comparing and ordering rational numbers/integers on a number line
Evaluating basic algebraic expressions prior to comparison

Standards Alignment (Common Core Math):
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.NS.C.7: Understand ordering and absolute value of rational numbers.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.NS.C.7.C: Understand the absolute value of a rational number as its distance from 0 on the number line; interpret absolute value as magnitude for a positive or negative quantity.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.NS.A.1.C: Understand subtraction of rational numbers as adding the additive inverse; apply properties of operations to evaluate distance between numbers.

Teacher’s Guide & Lesson Integration
Learning Objectives
Evaluate algebraic and numerical expressions involving absolute values and negations accurately.
Arrange positive numbers, negative numbers, and absolute value expressions in ascending and descending order.
Use a visual number line model to justify number placement and size comparisons.

Classroom Implementation Strategies

  1. Warm-Up / Bell Ringer (5–10 Minutes):
Project Level 1 on the board.
Have students work in pairs to write down the evaluated values on a mini-whiteboard before ordering them. Call up a student to drag the cards on an interactive whiteboard.
  2. Math Station / Independent Practice:
Assign Level 1 to students building foundational understanding and Level 2 to students needing an extra challenge. Require students to achieve a 5-streak before moving to the next station or exit activity.
  3. Formative Assessment / Exit Ticket:
Have students take a screenshot of their completed Level 2 summary showing their final score and streak.

Differentiation Strategies
For Support (Scaffolding):
Provide a physical printed number line and scratch paper.
Teach a two-step routine:
Step 1: Simplify/Evaluate the value under the card (e.g., write down -|-4| = -4).
Step 2: Place the evaluated numbers on the number line before moving the game cards.

For Acceleration (Extension):
Ask advanced students to write their own 5-expression sequence involving variable substitution (e.g., evaluate |x - y| when x = -2, y = 5) and swap with a partner to solve manually.

Key Reflection & Discussion Questions
“Why is |-8| greater than -8, but -|8| is equal to -8?"
“What is the effect of placing a negative sign outside the absolute value bars versus inside?"
“When arranging numbers in descending order, where do the most negative numbers go?"
“How does the number line visually prove whether your sequence is correct?"
