Educational Summary
Overview & Core Concepts
Unlike fixed number lines that feature every consecutive integer, Open Number Lines (or empty number lines) are visual tools that foster flexible mental computation. Instead of relying strictly on algorithmic column addition or counting by ones, open number lines encourage students to reason about numerical magnitude and place value structure.
This game bridges abstract symbolic addition with visual-spatial movement:
Decomposition by Place Value: Students break numbers into hundreds, tens, and ones (e.g., 143 = 100 + 40 + 3).
Benchmark Jumping (Making Tens): Students can jump to friendly milestone numbers (e.g., starting at 38, hopping +2 to land on 40, then hopping +23).
Additive Displacement: Reinforces addition as dynamic rightward displacement along a continuous number line.
Target Grade Levels & Standards Alignment
Target Grades: 1st Grade – 3rd Grade
Common Core State Standards (CCSS):
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.NBT.C.4: Add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number, and adding a two-digit number and a multiple of 10, using concrete models or drawings.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.5: Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.B.7: Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings… relate the strategy to a written method.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NBT.A.2: Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
