Welcome to the OO Sound Challenge! English can be tricky when two letters make two different sounds! This interactive game is designed to help learners distinguish between the Short “oo” (as heard in book or foot) and the Long “oo” (as heard in moon or spoon). By combining visual word recognition with clear audio cues, players can build their phonics confidence in a fun, fast-paced environment. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

 

 

How to Play

1. Start the Game:
   Click the large START SORTING button on the menu to begin your challenge.
   

2. Listen and Read:
   A word will appear in the center of the screen (for example, “pool”). The game will automatically speak the word aloud. If you need to hear it again, simply click the Speaker (🔊) button.
   

3. Sort the Sound:
   Click the Blue Card (Short ‘oo’) if the word has a quick, clipped sound like foot.
   Click the Indigo Card (Long ‘oo’) if the word has a longer, stretching sound like moon.
   

4. Get Feedback:
   The game will immediately tell you if you are correct.
   Correct: You’ll see a green sparkle and your score will go up.
   Oops: If you miss one, the game will show you the correct answer so you can learn for next time.
   

5. Keep Going:
   Click NEXT WORD ➔ to move to the next challenge. The game is designed to show you every word in its library before repeating any, ensuring you get a well-rounded practice session!
