nth Term Math Game
Master linear sequences and the nth term formula T(n) = dn + c with nth Term Master! Practice finding sequence rules, get instant step-by-step hints on wrong answers, and test your skills across multiple difficulty levels. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the Game

  1. Observe the Sequence:
    Look at the numbers presented in the sequence (n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, …).
  2. Find the Common Difference (d):
Subtract any term from the term right after it (e.g., T2 - T1). Enter this value into the Difference (d) field.
  3. Find Term Zero (c):
Subtract the common difference d from the first term (T1 - d) to find T0. Enter this value into the Constant (c) field.
  4. Adjust the Operator Sign:
Click the + / - toggle button to set the sign for c according to whether term zero is positive or negative.
  5. Submit Your Answer:
Press Submit Rule (or press Enter).
If Correct: Your correct count and total attempts update, your streak increments, and the next question loads automatically!
If Incorrect: The game displays an instant step-by-step hint modal breaking down how d and c are calculated for that exact sequence. Review the steps and click Next Question ➔ to try the next problem.

Educational Summary
Topic: Algebra & Number Patterns — Linear Sequences and nth Term Rule Derivation (T(n) = dn + c).

Target Audience:
Middle School / Key Stage 3 / High School Students (Ages 11–16)
GCSE / Algebra 1 students studying Arithmetic Progressions and Linear Functions

Key Mathematical Concepts Covered:
Common Difference (d): Recognizing constant rate of change in discrete sequential data.
Term Zero (c): Understanding the y-intercept analogue (c = T0) in linear functions f(x) = mx + c.
Algebraic Representation: Translating concrete numeric patterns into abstract algebraic expressions (dn + c).
Signed Arithmetic: Handling increasing (positive difference) and decreasing (negative difference) sequences.

Pedagogical Rationale:
The game reinforces conceptual understanding through formative feedback loops. Rather than giving hints before attempting, students are encouraged to formulate their own hypotheses first. When an error is made, the Step-by-Step Hint Modal provides immediate diagnostic feedback tailored to the specific sequence, turning mistakes into learning opportunities without disrupting classroom flow.

Differentiated Instruction
Support / Intervention: Start on Easy Mode (positive d and positive c). When students make a mistake, encourage them to write down the two breakdown steps shown in the hint modal into their notebooks as a reference formula.
Extension / Acceleration: Move to Hard Mode where sequences have large initial terms, negative common differences (d < 0), or negative c. Challenge students to derive the rule mentally without writing down intermediate steps.

Assessment & Progress Tracking
Use the built-in Score Ratio (Correct / Attempted) as a quick formative assessment:
80%+ Accuracy: Mastery achieved; ready to move to quadratic sequences or graph plotting.
Below 60% Accuracy: Student should review the step-by-step hint modal on missed problems to identify whether the error stems from miscalculating d (rate of change) or miscalculating c (term zero / signed arithmetic).
