Mutually Exclusive Events Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Mutually Exclusive Events Worksheet/Game. Playing this game is a straightforward way to master the Addition Rule for probability. Since the events in these scenarios are mutually exclusive (meaning they cannot happen at the same time), your goal is to identify the individual probabilities and sum them up. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

Mutually Exclusive & Inclusive Events are OR events.

  1. The Core Objective
In each of the 30 scenarios, you are presented with a choice between two or more outcomes. Because the outcomes are disjoint (like rolling a 1 OR a 6 on a single die), you solve the problem by adding:
    P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B)

  2. Steps
Start the Game: Click the Start button.

Read the Scenario:
Pay attention to the total number of items (the denominator) and the specific items you are looking for (the numerators).

Select an Answer: Choose one of the four options in the grid.
Emerald/Green Highlight: You got it right! Your score will increase by 1 point.
Red Highlight: You missed this one, but don’t worry—the score won’t go down.
Review the Logic: After every answer, a Logic Box appears at the bottom. It shows the exact calculation so you can see how the fractions were added or reduced.

Progress: Click Next Scenario to move forward. You can track your progress (e.g., “Scenario 5/30”) at the top right.

  1. Tips for Success
Simplify: If a bag has 30 markers and you want 12 blue or 10 silver, think of it as \(\frac{22}{30}\). The game often provides the answer in its simplest reduced form \(\frac{11}{15}\).
Look for Decimals: Some questions use percentages or decimals. Just add them directly (e.g., 0.25 + 0.15 = 0.40).
Check the “Total”: Always double-check if the sum adds up to 1 (a 100% certainty), as some scenarios include all possible outcomes.
