Mutually Exclusive & Inclusive Events Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Mutually Exclusive & Inclusive Events Worksheet/Game. Mutually exclusive events are disjoint and cannot happen at the same time. (Eg. you cannot roll a 2 and a 5 simultaneously). Mutually inclusive events are overlapping and can happen at the same time. (Eg. you can pick a card that could be a King and also be Red).
This game is designed to test your ability to distinguish between and calculate the probability of mutually exclusive and inclusive events. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
Mutually Exclusive & Inclusive Events are OR events.

Differences between Mutually Exclusive & Inclusive Events
| Feature | Mutually Exclusive | Mutually Inclusive |
|---|---|---|
| Can happen together? | No | Yes |
| Overlap (Intersection) | 0 | Greater than 0 |
| Addition Formula | P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) | P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A ∩ B) |
| Venn Diagram | Separate circles | Overlapping circles |
| Example | Rolling a 1 or Rolling a 6 | Rolling an Even or Rolling a 4 |
Why is the subtraction important?
The subtraction is necessary to prevent counting the overlapped events twice. In mutually exclusive events, P(A ∩ B) = 0.

The “Overlap” Test
Ask yourself one question before you look at the numbers: “Can both of these things be true at once?"
If the answer is NO (Mutually Exclusive)
Use the Simple Addition formula. Just add the two probabilities together.
Example: Rolling a 2 or a 5 on a die. You can’t roll both at once.
Formula:
P(A) + P(B)
If the answer is YES (Mutually Inclusive)
Add the two probabilities, then subtract the one outcome they share so you don’t count it twice.
Example: Drawing a Red card or a Queen. The “Queen of Hearts” fits both, so it’s the overlap.
Formula:
P(A) + P(B) - P(A ∩ B)
Calculate & Pick: Select the correct probability from the grid.
Right answer: You’ll hear a high-pitched “ding” and gain a point.
Wrong answer: You’ll hear a low “buzz” and see the correct logic revealed.
Review the Math: After every answer, the game shows you the exact formula and calculation used so you can learn from any mistakes.
