This Multiply Function Game/Worksheet is a great way to put your skills to the test in a fun environment. By practicing, you’ll start to work out the answers efficiently.
Multiply Function Game
This game will require you to multiply two linear functions and provide the resulting quadratic expression. It will require the FOIL Method to solve. Scroll down for a detailed explanation.
How to Play the Multiply Function Game
The Ingredients
You are given two linear functions:
f(x): e.g., 2x + 1
g(x): e.g., x - 3
The Goal
Find (f · g)(x). This means you need to multiply the two expressions:
(2x + 1)(x - 3)
The Method (FOIL)
To get the correct answer, multiply the terms in this specific order:
Firsts: Multiply the x terms (2x · x = 2x2).
Outers: Multiply the far left and far right (2x · -3 = -6x).
Inners: Multiply the two middle terms (1 · x = 1x).
Lasts: Multiply the two constant numbers (1 · -3 = -3).
Finally, Combine Like Terms: Add the “Outers” and “Inners” together:
-6x + 1x = -5x
Final Answer: 2x2 - 5x - 3
How to Enter Answers
Exponents: Use x^2 for x2.
Formatting: You can include or omit spaces (e.g., x^2+2x+1 or x^2 + 2x + 1 both work).
Signs: Be very careful with negatives! A negative times a negative is a positive.
Scoring
Multiplication is significantly harder than addition, so each correct “Product Verification” earns you 50 points. If you get stuck on a tricky set of negatives, use the Skip Problem button to reset.
