Educational Summary
Multiplying and dividing rational expressions extends numerical fraction arithmetic to algebraic functions (CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA.APR.D.6). This game gives Grade 9 students structured practice in performing operations on algebraic fractions while emphasizing polynomial factoring as the core simplification tool.

The question set covers four essential mathematical concepts:

  1. Monomial Multiplication & Division: Multiplying numerators/denominators directly and applying exponent rules (\(\frac{x^a}{x^b} = x^{a-b}\)).
  2. Division via Reciprocal: Applying the Keep-Change-Flip strategy (\(\frac{A}{B} \div \frac{C}{D} = \frac{A}{B} \cdot \frac{D}{C}\)).
  3. Binomial & Trinomial Factoring: Factoring GCFs, differences of squares (a2 - b2), and quadratic trinomials (ax2 + bx + c) before canceling matching factors.
  4. Complete Cancellation to 1: Recognizing scenarios where all variable terms in the numerator and denominator divide out, leaving a simplified quotient of 1.

Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:

  1. Convert a rational expression division problem into an equivalent multiplication problem using the reciprocal.
  2. Factor numerators and denominators completely using GCF, difference of squares, and trinomial factoring.
  3. Divide out common polynomial factors to express the product or quotient in simplest form.

Classroom Integration Ideas
Warm-Up / Formative Assessment (10 Minutes): Assign one round of the game at the start of class to assess student readiness before moving on to adding and subtracting rational expressions with unlike denominators.
Partner Math Center: Pair students up with a single device and scratch paper. One student handles factoring the numerators while the second student factors the denominators, collaborating to identify common terms to cancel.
Homework / Digital Exit Ticket: Have students screenshot their final summary screen (Score: X/10) to verify completion and mastery.

Key Misconceptions to Address

  1. Forgetting to Invert the Second Fraction: Students often forget to flip the second expression when dividing, inadvertently performing multiplication instead of division.
  2. Canceling Before Factoring: Students frequently try to cross-cancel individual terms across addition or subtraction signs before factoring polynomials into products. Emphasize: Factor first, cancel second.
  3. Flipping the Wrong Fraction: In division problems involving three terms or complex fractions, students sometimes flip the first fraction instead of the divisor (the second fraction).
