Multiply cm and mm Game
This Multiply cm and mm Game is a math challenge where you take a single measurement—like the length of a small bolt or a piece of ribbon—and multiply it to find the total length of several identical pieces. Scroll down for a detailed explanation.
How to Play the Multiply cm and mm Game
Read the Problem
The game gives you a measurement in centimeters (cm) and millimeters (mm), followed by a multiplier (a whole number).
Example: 3 cm 6 mm multiplied by 4.
Multiply the Millimeters
Multiply the millimeter number by your multiplier first.
6 mm × 4 = 24 mm.
Regroup the Millimeters
Just like in addition, you can’t have 10 or more in the millimeter box. You must “bundle” them into centimeters.
Since 10 mm = 1 cm, take 20 mm and turn them into 2 cm.You are left with 4 mm.
Multiply the Centimeters
Now, multiply the original centimeter number by the multiplier.
3 cm × 4 = 12 cm.
Combine Your Totals
Add the centimeters you “carried over” from Step 3 to your centimeter total.
12 cm + 2 cm (carried) = 14 cm.
Final Answer to type in: 14 cm and 4 mm.
Example:
Problem: 5 cm 8 mm × 3
Multiply mm: 8 × 3 = 24 mm.
Regroup mm: 24 mm becomes 2 cm and 4 mm.
Multiply cm: 5 × 3 = 15 cm.
Add Carry: 15 + 2 = 17 cm.
Result: 17 cm 4 mm.
This video gives a clear, step-by-step approach on understanding how to multiply mixed units of cm and mm.
