Multi-Step Absolute Value Inequality Game
Master multi-step absolute value inequalities with this free interactive game! Solve compound AND/OR inequalities and visualize solutions on a number line. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the Game
Goal
Solve multi-step absolute value inequalities by selecting the correct compound inequality type (AND vs OR) and determining the boundary limits for x.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Read the Inequality:
Examine the problem displayed at the top of the screen (e.g., 2|x| + 3 ≤ 11)
  2. Choose the Compound Inequality Type:
AND (Bounded Interval): Choose this when the absolute value is less than (≤, <) a value (“Less thAND”). The solution will lie between two numbers.
OR (Two Separate Tails): Choose this when the absolute value is greater than (≥, >) a value (“GreatOR”). The solution extends outward toward positive and negative infinity.
  3. Calculate the Boundary Values:
Solve for x algebraically to find the upper and lower boundary numbers, then enter them into the input fields.
  4. Submit & Review:
Click Submit Answer to check your work.
Watch the bottom Number Line Visualizer draw your answer dynamically:
    Filled Circle (•): Inclusive boundaries (≤, ≥).
    Open Circle (○): Strict boundaries (<, >).
Green Line / Dots: Correct answer.
Red Line / Dots: Incorrect answer with detailed feedback.
  5. Track Your Score & Streak:
Keep practicing to build your streak and earn a higher accuracy score!

Educational Summary
Mathematical Context
Absolute value represents the distance of a number from zero on a number line. When combined with multi-step linear operations (k|x| ± c ≤ d or |x ± b| > a), students must apply two foundational algebraic concepts:

  1. Properties of Inequalities: Knowing how distance scales and shifts along a number line.
  2. Compound Logic: Understanding the logic behind conjunctions (AND / intersections) versus disjunctions (OR / unions).

Learning Objectives
Identify whether an absolute value inequality creates an intersectional (AND) or union (OR) compound statement.
Calculate exact upper and lower boundary limits for multi-step expressions.
Connect algebraic solution sets directly to visual representations on a real number line.

Lesson Integration Ideas
Warm-Up / Bell Ringer (5–10 mins):
Display 3–5 consecutive problems on a projector. Have the class vote on AND vs. OR before solving the boundary points
together. Differentiated Practice / Station Rotation (15–20 mins):
Include this web game as an independent digital station during guided practice rotations.
Exit Ticket / Assessment:
Ask students to play until they achieve a 5-streak, then take a screenshot of their final score and streak to turn in.

Common Student Misconceptions & How to Address Them

  1. Confusing AND vs. OR:
Mnemonic Anchor: Remind students of the classic memory trick:
    “Less thAND” → |x| < a or |x| ≤ a means AND.
    “GreatOR” → |x| > a or |x| ≥ a means OR.
  2. Mixing Up Open and Closed Circles on Graphing:
    Remind Students:
Strict inequalities (<, >) do not include the boundary point → Open Circle (○).
Non-strict inequalities (≤, ≥) do include the boundary point → Closed Circle (•).
  3. Neglecting Negatives in Shifts:
    In expressions like |x - 4| ≤ 5, students often forget that the center shifts to x = +4, giving bounds at -1 and 9 rather than -5 and 5. Encourage them to set up both equations: x - 4 ≤ 5 and x - 4 ≥ -5.
