Missing Operator Worksheet/Game
Welcome to Missing Operator game. This is a game about finding the missing relationship between numbers. Instead of giving the answer, you are finding the action (the operator) that makes the equation true. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.
How to Play
Analyze the Equation:
Look at the numbers on the screen. There will be a pink dashed box where a math sign should be.
Determine the Relationship:
Addition (+): Choose this if the two numbers on the side of the operator combine to make a larger sum.
Subtraction (-): Choose this if the first number is being reduced to a smaller difference.
Check for the “Flip”:
The game will occasionally swap the sides. Whether it’s 5 [?] 2 = 7 or 7 = 5 [?] 2, the logic remains the same.
Select Your Sign:
Click the large + or - button.
Green: You got it right! Your score increases.
Red: That wasn’t the right sign. The game will highlight the correct sign in green so you can see why it works.
Advance:
Click the Next Level ➜ button to generate a brand new math sentence.
Why It’s Helpful for Learners
This game helps build operation sense. Instead of just calculating, students learn to predict outcomes. For example, if they see 8 and 3 resulting in 5, their brain begins to automatically recognize that as a “subtraction” relationship.
