Men, Median, Mode, Range (Find Missing Data) Game/Worksheet
Welcome to the Men, Median, Mode, Range (Find Missing Data) Challenge! This game is an interactive math game designed to help you learn how to use a stem-and-leaf plot, which is mathematical tool that organizes data by splitting each number into two distinct parts to reveal hidden shapes, trends, and averages at a single glance. A stem-and-leaf plot works by separating data by place value so you can see the distribution of data points without losing the original numbers. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play
The game is structured as a 10-stage diagnostics run. Each stage presents a new scenario and a fresh dataset plotted on your dashboard.

  1. Set Up Your Game Mode: On the main menu screen, you can toggle the synthesizer sound effects on or off, and decide if you want to challenge yourself with a ticking 60-Second Blitz Timer. Click Initialize Screen to start your mission.

  2. Analyze the Deck: Each round, you will see a row of digital data cards. All of them display a number except for one golden mystery card.

  3. Read the Clue: Look at the Dataset Clue box directly beneath the cards. It will give you a specific clue based on one of four math concepts: Mean, Median, Mode, or Range.

  4. Choose Your Answer: Calculate what the missing number must be to make that clue true. Click one of the four choice buttons in the grid below.

  5. Review the Proof: An overlay will instantly slide up to show if you were right or wrong, along with a step-by-step mathematical proof of the calculation. Click Advance to Next Node to move forward through all 10 rounds to reach your final performance assessment!

How the Math Works
The game challenges you across four distinct mathematical tiers. Here is exactly how to solve the puzzle for each type of clue you encounter:

  1. Mean (Average)
    The mean is the “balance point” of the data. To calculate the mean, you add all the numbers together and divide by how many cards there are.
    The Strategy: To find the missing number, work backward by multiplying the given clue value by the total number of cards. This tells you what the grand total should be. Then, subtract all the visible numbers from that target total to isolate your missing variable.

  2. Median (Middle Value)
    The median is the exact center number of a dataset when everything is arranged in order from smallest to largest.
    The Strategy: Imagine lining up all the cards from lowest to highest. Since the datasets in this tier use an odd number of items (5 cards), the median is simply the value sitting perfectly in the middle slot. Look at where the golden card sits relative to the other sorted values to balance the alignment.

  3. Mode (Most Frequent)
    The mode is the number that appears most often in a collection of data.
    The Strategy: Scan the visible cards in the deck. If all the other numbers only show up once, the mystery card must copy the exact number provided in your clue. Doubling it ensures that specific number wins the popularity contest and becomes the unique mode.

  4. Range (The Boundary Span)
    The range measures the distance or spread between the absolute highest and lowest boundaries in your dataset. It is calculated using the formula:
    Range = Maximum - Minimum
    The Strategy: Look at the visible cards to find the lowest number (the minimum). To find the missing maximum value, simply add the given Range clue directly to that minimum value:
    x = Minimum + Range
